The Dab Rig
A purpose-built dab rig is ideal — smaller than a bong, usually 6–10 inches tall, with a female joint (commonly 14mm or 10mm). Smaller rigs preserve terpene flavor better; larger rigs with more water filtration can slightly mute flavors. If you’re just starting out, any clean, functional rig will work while you learn.
The Banger (Nail)
The banger is the most important component. A quartz banger is the gold standard for beginners and experts alike — it heats evenly, retains heat well, and doesn’t impart any metallic flavor. Avoid cheap glass nails. Look for a thick-bottomed flat-top banger, which allows for easy application and works with a carb cap. Expect to spend $20–$40 CAD on a quality quartz banger.
The Torch
You need a butane torch that produces a consistent, focused flame. Standard kitchen torches are too weak. A dedicated butane dab torch (available at most smoke shops) is the right tool. Fill it with refined butane — lower purity butane leaves residue that can affect flavor.
The Dabber Tool and Carb Cap
A dabber is a small metal or glass wand used to apply concentrate to the hot banger. A carb cap is a lid that covers the banger after you apply your concentrate — it restricts airflow and lowers the pressure inside the banger, allowing concentrates to vaporize completely at lower temperatures. This is especially important with oily concentrates like HTFSE and terp sauce.
Step-by-Step: How to Take a Dab
Once your rig is filled with clean water and you have your concentrate ready, follow these five steps for a perfect dab every time.
Step 1: Load Your Concentrate
Use your dabber to scoop a rice-grain to pea-sized amount of concentrate onto the tip of the tool. For beginners, less is always more — concentrates are far more potent than flower. A single 0.1–0.2g dab can equal multiple bowls of herb. For stable concentrates like shatter, you can simply break off a small piece. For oilier products like HTFSE, use a gel-style dabber with a spoon or paddle tip.
Step 2: Heat the Banger
Point your torch at the bottom of the banger and apply heat for 20–30 seconds for a 3–4mm thick quartz banger. You’ll see the quartz glow faintly red. Do not overheat — a glowing red banger is too hot and will destroy terpenes and produce harsh, black smoke.
Step 3: Let It Cool (Temperature Is Everything)
After torching, wait. For a standard quartz banger, let it cool for 30–45 seconds after the glow fades before applying your concentrate. Step 4: Apply and Inhale
Touch your loaded dabber to the bottom of the warm banger and slowly rotate it to coat the surface. As the concentrate vaporizes on contact, begin inhaling slowly and steadily through the mouthpiece. A slow, controlled draw gives the rig time to filter and cool the vapor through the water.
Step 5: Cap and Clear
Immediately after applying your concentrate, place your carb cap over the banger opening. This traps vapor and lowers the pressure, vaporizing any remaining material. Continue to inhale while gently spinning the carb cap to swirl the melted concentrate around the walls. When vapor production slows, remove the cap and clear the rig.
Temperature Guide: Low-Temp vs. High-Temp Dabs
Temperature is the single biggest variable in the quality of a dab. Here’s how the spectrum breaks down:

- Post-dab swab: After every dab, while the banger is still warm, use a dry cotton swab to wipe out any remaining oil.
- ISO soak: Once a week, soak the banger in 99% isopropyl alcohol for 15–30 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
- Full rig clean: Pour isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt into the rig, plug the openings, and shake vigorously. Rinse with warm water.
- Water changes: Fresh water every single session. Stale water is one of the biggest flavor killers.
