What Is Crumble

Crumble is a cannabis concentrate with a dry, soft, easily-broken texture. It looks and feels like waxy honeycomb or aged cheese. Made by whipping BHO extract on lower heat than wax or shatter, then purging slower to produce the characteristic crumbly consistency. What is crumble?

Crumble (sometimes called “honeycomb wax” or “crumble wax”) is a hydrocarbon-extracted cannabis concentrate distinguished by its dry, soft, crumbly texture. Unlike shatter (brittle and glassy) or budder (creamy and smooth), crumble breaks apart easily into smaller pieces and crumbles between your fingers – hence the name. The texture comes from the production process: lower-heat purging with intermittent agitation that allows microscopic pockets of air to form throughout the extract, creating the honeycomb-like structure when it solidifies.

How is crumble made?

Production process:

• Cannabis is washed with butane or propane to dissolve trichome resin
• Solvent is partially purged at low heat (90-110F)
• The extract is whipped intermittently as the purge continues
• Extended purge time (48-72 hours) at lower heat than shatter or budder
• Final residual solvent must hit under 500 ppm for legal sale

The slower, lower-heat purge is the key. Shatter purges faster at higher temps, locking in the glass-like form. Crumble purges slowly, allowing terpenes to evaporate slightly while air pockets form throughout the matrix. The result is structurally distinct from any other concentrate.

What does crumble look like?

Visual signatures of quality crumble:

• Colour: pale yellow to light amber
• Texture: dry and powdery-soft on the surface
• Structure: honeycomb-like air pockets visible when broken
• Feel: breaks apart easily when scooped, almost cookie-crumb consistency
• Sheen: matte rather than glossy

Dark amber or brown crumble means over-aged or over-purged extract. Sticky crumble means under-purged. The dry-but-not-brittle texture is what separates good crumble from failed attempts at shatter or budder.

How strong is crumble?

THC content typically lands in the 60-80% range:

• Mid-tier crumble: 60-70% THC
• Premium crumble: 70-80% THC
• Live crumble (made from fresh-frozen flower): up to 85% THC

Crumble runs slightly below shatter and budder on average potency because the longer purge time loses some volatile compounds. The trade-off is the terpene profile – crumble preserves more terpenes than shatter, providing more flavour at slightly lower cannabinoid concentration.

How do you dab crumble?

Dabbing crumble:

• Heat quartz banger with torch until red-hot
• Cool 30-45 seconds for 450F or 50-60 seconds for 400F
• Scoop 0.05-0.1 g of crumble with dab tool – it scoops easily because dry
• Drop into banger
• Cap with carb cap, inhale slowly

The dry texture is the practical advantage. Where budder or sauce sticks to dab tools and requires careful scraping, crumble lifts cleanly and doesn’t string. For low-temp dabs (400-440F), crumble is the easiest concentrate to portion accurately.

Can you put crumble in a joint or bowl?

Yes – and crumble is the easiest concentrate to use this way:

• Top a bowl: sprinkle 0.05-0.1 g crumble on flower – it breaks naturally into fine pieces
• Twax a joint: roll a thin layer of crumble onto a sticky joint or sprinkle inside the paper
• Mix into ground flower: crumble disperses evenly when mixed with cannabis

How do you store crumble?

Crumble is the most forgiving concentrate to store:

• Silicone or non-stick container
• Cool dark cabinet at 60-70F
• Out of direct light
• Sealed against air
• Does not require refrigeration for short-term (under 1 month)

Refrigeration is fine for long-term storage but not strictly necessary because the lower moisture content makes crumble less prone to oxidation than budder or sauce. A sealed silicone container in a dark drawer holds crumble at peak quality for 6-9 months.

How long does crumble last?

Properly stored:

• Peak quality: 6-9 months
• Usable: 12-18 months
• Terpene fade: starts after month 6, accelerates after month 12
• Cannabinoid degradation: 0.5-1% per month under typical storage

Crumble degrades primarily through terpene loss and slow oxidation of THC to CBN. The texture stays consistent even as flavour fades. Old crumble still smokes fine; it just loses the bright terpene character.

Is crumble safe?

Legal Canadian crumble must be lab-tested for:

• Residual solvents under 500 ppm
• Pesticides under detection limits
• Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury)
• Microbial contamination
