TL;DR

THCa diamonds are pure crystalline tetrahydrocannabinolic acid – the cannabinoid that converts to THC when heat is applied. They form inside a sealed jar of live resin over weeks as the THCa naturally separates from the terpene-rich sauce. Diamonds test 95-99% THCa, are functionally inert until decarbed by a torch or vape, and deliver the cleanest, most intense high in the concentrate category.

What exactly is a THCa diamond?

A THCa diamond is the acid precursor of THC in crystalline solid form. Cannabis flowers produce THCa, not THC – the conversion happens only when heat (cigarette lighter, dab nail, vape coil) cleaves a carboxyl group off the molecule. Sealed in a sauce of terpenes and minor cannabinoids, dissolved THCa slowly crystallizes out as pure clear-to-amber stones, the same way rock candy forms in a sugar solution.

How are diamonds actually made?

The diamond miner process: harvest fresh frozen cannabis, run it through a hydrocarbon extraction (butane or propane) to make live resin, then jar the solvent-free resin and let it sit. Over 2-6 weeks at controlled temperature, the supersaturated THCa solution drops crystals to the bottom while terpene sauce pools on top. Some producers manipulate temperature or pressure to grow specific crystal sizes. The final product is decanted: large diamonds, sauce, or both together.

How strong are they?

Pure THCa diamonds test 95-99% THCa by weight. When heated and inhaled, the conversion to THC is about 87.7% efficient by molecular weight, so a 99% THCa diamond delivers roughly 86% available THC per gram. That is roughly 3-4x the potency of AAAA flower and noticeably stronger than shatter or budder, which include more residual lipids and waxes.

Do you have to add the sauce back in?

For pure potency, no. For flavour and effect, yes. Naked diamonds are nearly tasteless and produce a flat clean high. Adding back the terpene sauce restores the strain character – the smells, the entourage effect, the texture. Most premium concentrate sold as diamonds and sauce is a deliberate ratio of large THCa crystals re-suspended in their original terpene fraction. Connoisseurs adjust the ratio to taste.

How do you dab a diamond?

Same as any concentrate but with a key difference – the heat conversion matters. Low temp dabs around 450-525 F preserve terpenes and produce a smoother hit. High temp dabs over 700 F flash-convert more THCa to THC quickly and waste flavour. Cold start (load the cool nail, then heat) gives a balanced rip. Can you smoke a diamond like a joint?

You can crush a small diamond onto a bowl of flower or sprinkle it on a joint. The flower carries the burn, the diamond melts and decarbs in the heat, and the joint hits much harder. Plain diamonds in a pipe by themselves are wasteful – they need a substrate to combust against, or a dab rig to vaporize properly.

Why are some diamonds clear and others amber?

Pure THCa is colourless. Amber, gold, or yellow tints come from trapped terpenes, minor cannabinoids (CBN, CBG), or oxidation. Cleaner extraction and faster crystallization give clear diamonds. Slower, warmer crystallization gives larger but more colour-tinted crystals. Colour is not a quality marker on its own – test results matter more.

How are diamonds different from THCa isolate?

THCa isolate is mechanically purified THCa powder, usually 98-99% pure but completely terpene-free and made from cured material. Diamonds form naturally inside live resin and pull surrounding terpenes into the crystal structure. Isolate is flat and surgical. Diamonds carry strain identity even at 99% purity. How do you store them?

An airtight non-stick container (silicone or borosilicate glass) at room temperature, out of direct light. Refrigeration is fine but bring the jar to room temp before opening to prevent condensation. Vacuum sealing extends shelf life past 12 months. THCa is stable – heat, light, and oxygen are the only real enemies.

Are diamonds federally legal in Canada?

Yes, under the Cannabis Act. Diamonds are sold by licensed Canadian producers as concentrates and fall under the same rules as shatter or rosin. The retail limit is 10 g of dried-cannabis-equivalent per public possession – one g of diamonds counts as 5 g of dried equivalent. Federal regulations are documented at Health Canada.
