What is budder?

Budder (also called batter, cake batter, or whipped wax) is a cannabis extract that has been mechanically agitated during the post-extraction purge process. The whipping action introduces microscopic air bubbles and forces nucleation, which converts the clear, glassy structure of shatter into a soft, opaque, butter-like texture. Underneath the texture difference, it is still the same butane- or propane-extracted cannabinoid and terpene matrix – the change is structural, not chemical.

How is budder made?

Production starts with hydrocarbon extraction:

• Dried cannabis is washed with cold butane or propane to dissolve trichome resin
• The solvent is purged off in a vacuum oven at 90-110F for 24-72 hours
• Mid-purge, the extract is whipped with a metal tool to introduce nucleation
• The whipping continues every 2-4 hours until the extract turns opaque and creamy
• Final residual solvent must hit under 500 ppm to be legal in Canada

The key skill is timing the whip. Too early and the extract is too liquid to hold structure. Too late and it has already locked into shatter form. The 24-48 hour window during active purge is the sweet spot.

How strong is budder?

THC content typically lands at 60-80%. AAAA-grade craft flower budder can push above 80%. Compared to flower at 18-28% THC, budder is 3-4x stronger by weight, which is why users measure dabs in 0.05-0.1 g portions rather than full bowls. CBD-dominant budder exists but is rare in the Canadian market.

What does budder feel like compared to other concentrates?

Different concentrates produce different effects from the same flower:

• Shatter: glassy, clean, more THC-focused, less terpene flavour
• Budder: creamy, balanced THC + terpene experience, easier scooping
• Live resin: more terpene-rich because it uses fresh frozen flower
• Wax/crumble: drier, less stable, harder to handle on a dab tool
• Sauce/diamonds: separated cannabinoid crystals with terpene liquid layer

How do you dab budder?

Standard dab rig technique:

• Heat quartz banger with a torch until red-hot, then let cool 30-45 seconds
• Optimal dab temperature is 350-400F (low temp) or 500-550F (medium)
• Use a dab tool to scoop 0.05-0.1 g of budder into the banger
• Cap with a carb cap to manage airflow and reclaim flavour
• Inhale slowly to vaporize, then exhale

Low-temp dabs preserve terpene flavour. High-temp dabs burn off flavour but produce bigger clouds. The carb cap is the difference between a wasted dab and a clean one.

Can you put budder in a joint or bowl?

Yes. Two methods:

• Twax a joint: smear a thin line of budder along the inside of the rolling paper before adding flower
• Top a bowl: place a 0.05 g dab on top of packed flower in a bong or pipe

Either method roughly doubles the potency of the session. Some users prefer this to dabbing because it does not require a rig and the flower acts as a buffer for the high THC concentration.

How do you store budder?

Cold, dark, airtight. Specifically:

• Silicone or non-stick parchment container
• Refrigerated at 35-40F
• Out of direct light
• Sealed against air exposure

Heat is the worst enemy – budder left at room temperature for weeks turns runny, loses terpenes, and starts oxidizing toward CBN. Frozen budder gets brittle and harder to scoop. Refrigeration is the sweet spot.

How long does budder last?

Properly stored, budder holds peak potency for 6-9 months and remains usable for 12-18 months. Terpene content fades fastest – the flavour profile shifts from fresh and bright at month 1 to dull and earthy by month 8. THC degradation is slower at roughly 0.5-1% per month under good storage.

What colour should good budder be?

Pale yellow to light amber. Bright white-yellow indicates fresh, well-purged extract. Dark amber or brown means oxidation, over-purging, or low-quality starting material. Green tint means chlorophyll contamination – the extraction pulled plant material along with resin. Black or red is overheated and degraded.

Is budder safe?

Legal Canadian budder must be lab-tested for residual solvents (under 500 ppm), pesticides, heavy metals, and microbial contamination before sale. Unregulated budder from grey-market sources can carry residual butane, pesticides, or moulds. Always look for the batch COA – if a producer cannot show one, walk. Health Canada’s cannabis regulations set the testing standards.
